i need some time

last week i rescued a dog.

she had been fighting the owners other dog, and had been put in a muzzle and cage. i collected her on wednesday. she was settling in, and i was starting to retrain her.

today started ok, normal morning walk, i did some work on the game while she slept, then i took her out in the van for a longer walk. i'm meant to back to work tomoorow so tire her out first. we got home, she was still full of energy. she ate, drank and laid down to sleep next to me. 10 minutes later, she gave a big sigh and died. i tried to do cpr or pound on her chest but i couldnt revive her. i thought there was some movement so i rushed her 20min to the emergency vets, but it was too late.

she wasn't even a year old, and i had her less than 5 days.

she died right next to where im sitting. i came home to her toys and stuff all over the flat. i failed her, and the vets dont even know what happened. no sign of bloating, no wounds, no signs of toxicity. i just need some time to deal with this. even though it was only 5 days, theyve all been about bonding, and this is what happened.

sorry

I'm more interested in the cause of death, but since vets examined the body, I guess they would've told if they found traces of rabies, But they could probably say more if they do the autopsy. Living beings don't normally just die without reason, and I'm leaning towards rabies since like you said they were fighing other dogs a lot

We don't have rabies in this country.

She was fighting because she'd claimed the owner and disliked the other dog getting close to her. I had to take her body to the nearest vet school for a postmortem, and waiting on results.

Please take all the time you need.
Losing a pet, even in the first few days, is hard, seeing that being die next to you is one of the worst things I can remember.
It will get better with time but it will always be a weird feeling.

The only advice I can give is to live through the next few weeks and then look for another pet.
Not as a replacement, because it never will be, but as a new companion to help with the feelings.

The worst part is I tried for 15 minutes to do chest compressions to revive her. Even though everyone including the vets say she wasn't coming back, you still have to deal with the idea that maybe another few minutes might have made the difference.

Please try not to think that a few minutes might have helped.

Whatever caused her death, if it's so sudden and inexplicable, a few minutes probably wouldn't change anything.

But thanks to you, she didn't have to die muzzled in a cage. It sounds like you allowed her to have a peaceful death instead.

The following may sound dull, but I wish someone had told me this: Focus on the time you've had.

Even if it was only a few days, during those days you gave her a better life.
Belive me, that's is all that
matters in the end.

That is terrible and i feel sorry for you. Losing someone is always awful. Take your time and don't be to hard on yourself. Who knows what happend to her to cause this but keep in mind that it wasn't your fault. Best of luck and try to stay positiv and remember that you made her last Days probably the best she had.
